The monarchs are here!

We honestly don’t know if they hatched here and are just starting their journey, or if they just stopped in as they’re migrating south, but we’re very happy to see them. They seem to like the wingstem’s yellow flowers the best—maybe that’s just because there’s not a lot to choose from at this time of year. We try to provide as many options as we can for both the butterflies and the bees.

And speaking of bees, we’ve extracted some delicious honey from the three hives near the greenhouse. We were pleasantly surprised at how busy they’d been, filling up several frames with some of the best honey we’ve tasted!

Elsewhere on the farm, walnut trees—both the black and the white varieties—are pelting anyone who might be underneath their branches. We’ve already gathered bags and bags of the green and black nuts, and now it’s time to see if we can successfully extract what’s inside to have some ready for holiday cooking.

The breeze has a new chill to it as it comes down from the mountain and sets the leaves dancing, and the sunlight has a decidedly fall color to it. (I don’t know if that’s a scientific thing because it’s lower in the sky or just a reflection of all the colors changing from green to yellow and beyond.)

The farm is a whole different place in the fall. Come see us!
